Do’s and Don’t of purchasing high end fashion
Many people think luxury brands are a waste of money. Personally, when I do set my sights on a beautiful designer bag, I make sure it's something I love and something I've earned—usually, I'll wait until the end of the semester or my birthday. I do this because I like having time to think about what I want. I don’t like to rush my purchases, for example, I bought Gucci Slides because I passed a math class and I’ve worn them once… $400 slides that have been worn once.
Here are my general rules to follow when thinking of making a luxury purchase:
DO set a budget...
This one is super important. Living expenses, food, emergency funds, etc., are more important than buying an item of luxury right off the bat, especially if you cannot afford it. It is also important to keep in mind the cost of the bag plus the tax. When I bought my Prada Re-Edition 2000 Nylin Mini Bag, I managed to say within my budget and only go over by $2.
Setting a budget helps you have more control over your purchase and prevents unnecessarily overspending. It also helps mitigate buyer’s remorse and allows you to enjoy your purchase. By setting a budget you’re also able to set some expectations in terms of what you’re going to be able to afford.
DON'T buy luxury clothes...
Quite often, luxury clothes are more than luxury accessories. Designer clothes are likely dry clean only, which can be annoying. Not a lot of people have the time or money to get their clothes dry clean. With accessories, you don't have to wash them (as often), they add detail to your outfit, and are something you can get a lot of use.
DO look at online consignment stores...
In my post, 5 things YOU NEED to consider before falling for new trends, I linked three online luxury consignment stores. These stores are great because they have sales, financing, and they have a wide variety of brands and items. I have also bought from consignment businesses off of Instagram before as well. My two favourites are @amourdeluxe.yvr and @jadoreluxeyvr. They are based in Vancouver, BC, and have great prices. All the items have been authenticated and their items are listed at a fair price.
DON'T fall for the hype
When buying a designer item, it's essential that you get something that fits in with your style, so avoid buying something just because it's popular and trendy or because everyone else has it. Buy something you're going to enjoy. If you find yourself falling for a trend, wait it out and look at the item in person before making your decision. If you still want it after all the hype, chances are the prices will be lower too!
